Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need experience to take this course?
No previous set-building experience is necessary. David will guide you step by step through the entire process, from layout to final assembly.

Do I need to know how to use a saw?
Yes, you’ll need to cut lumber for the flats. This course is not a how-to-use-tools class, so you should already be comfortable using power tools safely. A miter saw is recommended, but a miter box can be used if you do not have one. The traditional flat method does not require a table saw, while David’s advanced method does.

What tools do I need for this course?
Tool requirements depend on the flat-building method you choose. Both methods require a miter saw, brad nailer, and drill or driver, along with basic tools like a tape measure, speed square, straight edge, clamps, and a pencil. David’s advanced method also uses a table saw, pocket hole jig, and pocket screws. A miter box can be used if you do not have a miter saw. Safety gear like eye and hearing protection is assumed.

Do I need a full workshop or studio space?
No. These flats can be built in a garage, driveway, or any open workspace with enough room to cut and assemble materials safely.

What size are the flats?
The course focuses on standard 4x8 flats, with guidance on how to adjust sizes if needed.

Are measurements in imperial or metric?
The course is taught using imperial measurements, and metric equivalents are shown alongside whenever possible.

How long does the course take?
This is self-paced, so you can learn on your schedule.

How long will I have access to the course?
You’ll have lifetime access.
